As summer begins it's wind-down towards fall, we start to think about cozying up for the coming cold. (At least that's what I start thinking, especially with all this chilly weather we've been having!) As the neighbourhood children head back to school, or perhaps to begin school for the first time, it often feels like the start of the year for many of us as well, perhaps more than January and the "true" New Year.
A thought for the coming days:
"There is a feel to the year that goes beyond the number-filled grids that occupy our paper and electronic planners. In this intuitive calendar, we spend the summer living life out loud, outside and out of our usual rhythms. Fall arrives, ushering in routine, and balance. What is it that you are being called to bring to fruition in these waning days of productivity before the land falls fallow for a time? What dream, aspiration, project or relationship have you nurtured over the spring and summer? Is it reaping time? The Harvest Moon rises earlier than any other full moon and shines brighter to light our way."

This is a once-a-year event - our LunchBots, water bottles, and other stainless lunch containers are all 15% off! We've also done a bit of shoppe re-organizing – come in and take a peek – we hope you like our new look!
Shoppe EN Online!
Our most popular products are now available to buy on line at www.environmentnetwork.org/shoppe_products.html - all of the proceeds from our shoppe go back into programs in the community. We hope you'll stop in!
We DEPAVED Paradise!
Our first crack at Depaving Paradise was a wonderful success! On July 21st, we tore up 350 square feet of pavement (there were TWO layers of it!) behind the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts. Many thanks to all the volunteers that came out to help us that day, and a special thanks to our sponsors – Green Communities Canada, RBC Blue Water Project, Metcalf Foundation, CEC, Echo Foundation, Lafarge, Crozier and Associates, Envision Tatham, and last but certainly not least, Boston Pizza Collingwood for the fantastic and refuelling lunch!
Up next – we'll be starting to install hydromedia, gardens, trees and shrubs in the next few weeks – if you're willing and able to help, we'd love to have you!
Gearing back up for Girlfriends and The Crew
We are actively looking for a number of things for the Girlfriends/Crew programs:
1.) Program Sponsors – to help cover the costs of healthy snacks and the delivery of the program to schools
2.) Schools - willing to host the Girlfriends/Crew programs for their Grade 7's and 8's.
3.) Volunteer Mentors - for both Girlfriends (female mentors) and The Crew (male mentors).
Girlfriends and the Crew are an after school program for all girls (Girlfriends) and all boys (The Crew) in grades 7 & 8. It is hands on and active in nature, with volunteer mentors and guest professionals from the community providing positive leadership and serving as role models for the participants. It is our hope to help develop the self esteem of young people, to inspire and to empower them. We want to encourage them to have choice and most importantly to be confident in the choices they make. These programs provide youth with a space to be true to who they are, to learn, to laugh and to understand other points of view. During these programs, participants are given the tools needed to help improve their nutrition, physical fitness, self-esteem, and relationships. This comes in the form of healthy snacks and nutrition tips, accessible fitness activities, as well as respectful and supportive discussions. Our goal is to not only improve the youth's health in the short term, but throughout their lives.
If you know of a person or organization or school that may be interested in being part of either of these programs, we invite you to contact Stephanie at programs@environmentnetwork.org and/or Luke at community@environmentnetwork.org
Our summer camps are in full swing! We still have space available for the last few weeks of the summer, but they're filling up fast. Call soon to book your spot, or click here to reserve on line!
Drink Up! The Quench Buggy is now available!
The Collingwood Public Utilities recently took delivery of their new Quench Buggy. The Quench Buggy is free to use in the community, and is a portable water bottle filling station which has a 1000 litre holding tank or can be hooked up directly to a municipal water source. In addition the Quench Buggy has solar panels, which provides the electricity to pressurize the holding tank.
The Quench Buggy will be attending numerous events this summer - if you have any events you think the Collingwood Public Utilities Quench Buggy would be a great addition to, please contact Anne Norris at anorris@collus.com to inquire about the trailers availability.
