E-News, February 2013
February 15th, 2013
The month of February can certainly keep us on our toes; shovels in one hand and an umbrella in the other. Water truly is a restless substance. The hydrological cycle is wondrous, as water molecules are unlocked allowing it to change shape and form to be evaporated into vapour, condensed into droplets or frozen ice. Water is the most precious substance on earth and flows freely from the sky. A good snowfall or rain demands celebration.
The Environment Network is looking for young people between the ages of 15-30 to work on community projects in the Collingwood area.
This will be a paid contract position between March through July 2013. If you are out of school or out of work and a Canadian citizen then you can apply! If you are interested please contact the Environment Network at 705-446-0551, or drop in at 44 St Marie Street and fill out an application.

Water on the Table
February 20th, 2013
Water on the Table features Maude Barlow, an “international water-warrior” for her crusade to have water declared a human right. It juxtaposes Barlow’s arguments with her corporate critics who believe that Canada should bulk-export its water to the United States in the face of an imminent water crisis. The film follows Barlow in two struggles that bring the water issue home to Canadians – the Alberta Tar Sands and a local struggle in Simcoe County. “Water is life. It’s not like a debate about running shoes or oil. It’s a debate about life. We all need water to survive”.

Free Spirit Gardens is a charity in the Collingwood area with a mission to increase the capacity of our community to grow our own food, contributing to the creation of a sustainable food system. The work of the Free Spirit Gardens is improving the health of our community, soil, and ecosystems. They have been active for three years in growing organic food, helping others produce their own vegetables, and maintaining community gardens to bring people together.
Many groups exist that are concerned about climate change, food security, or health concerns related to our agriculture; Free Spirit Gardens is one small but powerful team demonstrating that people can make a difference. There are dozens of incredible people working and volunteering with the Free Spirit Gardens. Though everybody is attracted to the group for different reasons, everybody has something unique to share with the community. “I want to make southern G-bay a healthier place to live!” shared Matt, an avid environmentalist and founder of the team.
Because everybody involved aspires for sustainability, there are always many initiatives the group is working on to demonstrate their vision. From teaching students how to grow food and eat well, to composting organic matter of local business’, or sharing the fresh-grown goods with friends at the Farmers Market in Collingwood, there is no shortage of energy! This year, they will be hosting workshops about gardening, delivering produce to local restaurants, and making downtown Collingwood a more green and food productive space! Free Spirit Gardens is anticipating their most exciting and busy year yet for 2013! See everything they’re doing now and get in touch with their team at www.FreeSpiritGardens.org
Girlfriends
Wow I am so lucky to be part of such a wonderful program. We just wrapped up our GIRLFRIENDS session at Mountain View Public school and the outpours of love for this program were obvious. I wanted to thank Principal Doug Paul and all of the staff at Mountain View for being gracious hosts as always. We love being part of your school in such a special way. We are also coming into our final weeks at Beaver Valley Community School, where the response has been outstanding. We have our largest turnout at this school and want to thank everyone there, Principal Andy Amos, the CAC and all of the staff. There is wonderful enthusiasm for this program from them all. Starting this week we will be running GIRLFRIENDS at Connaught Public School and Admiral Collingwood Elementary School. We look forward to meeting the girls and sharing in all the wonderful aspects of this program.
