E-News, January 2013
Jan 24th, 2013
At this time of year, with temperatures dipping into the negative thirty range, it’s hard not to gripe about how terrible winter is while siting around shivering, and longingly wishing for spring. Winter, even at it’s coldest, isn’t all that bad if you just get outside and get into it! Dress for the weather with proper gear, and suddenly you’re out and enjoying it, and it doesn’t seem so bad anymore! Our area has so much to offer outdoors in the winter – downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snow tubing, snowmobiling, skating, the list goes on and on. And if none of that is in your budget range, bundle up and go for a hike - you’ll be warm and toasty, refreshed and revitalized, and feeling pretty great about winter by the time you’re done!

Living Downstream
January 30th, 2013
This poetic film follows ecologist and cancer survivor Sandra Steingraber PhD during one pivotal year as she travels across North America, working to break the silence about cancer and its environmental links. Living Downstream highlights research on two pervasive chemicals: atrazine, one of the most widely used herbicides in the world, and the industrial compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and follows these invisible toxins as they migrate to some of the most beautiful places in North America. Living Downstream is a powerful reminder of the intimate connection between the health of our bodies and the health of our air, land and water.

The Collingwood Community Food Co-op (CCFC)
The CCFC provides local and organic, non-genetically modified foods within our community. They are committed to working with the social and educational components of food, the industry of it and the politics. They use the values set up by fellow modern co-ops that have been in existence for over 150 years. There are many different co-ops - housing, insurance, food, etc. At CCFC they keenly support our local producers to sustain our regional and local economy and give a good clean choice for food, simply grown without dependence on chemical based methods.
As a co-op, CCFC also wants good governance over food and resource issues that affect everyone (ie water protection, pesticides, or growth hormones in the food system.) In this way we make available, good, regional food for ourselves and neighbours.
Looking ahead, here are some things are happening:
- instructional kitchen - expect to be completed in February 2013
- seasonal dinners for members
- prepared take-home food items produced right in our kitchen
- a variety of nutrition and cooking classes to meet the needs of our community
- kitchen space rentals for groups - make jam with your friends, have a pie party, etc.
All are welcome to shop at the co-op. However, being a member has its benefits. Not only do members 'own their grocery store' but they also receive a 10% discount off each store purchase. More details on membership can be found on our website and facebook page.
