Manfred Max-Neef is well known for developing the Human Development Model, based on the Fundamental Human Needs. The list of Fundamental Human Needs is short, finite and classifiable (in contrast to the notion of “wants”, which is often a considerably longer and insatiable list!) The basic human needs are the same worldwide. The only thing that changes is how we, as different cultures, go about satisfying those needs. Too often we get caught up in our list of “wants,” which tend to come at the cost of something else’s needs, putting other humans, animals and our planet at risk.
The list of Fundamental Human Needs is something that governs much of what we do at the Environment Network. Having your basic human needs met is a core principle for sustainability – without it, we can not move forward on this earth in a positive way. When someone’s basic human needs are being met in a constructive way, their lives are happier, more fulfilled, and they are inclined to take care of and help other people. This can only have a positive impact on the lives of all people on this earth!

THE CREW update
In the past weeks, the participants of The Crew have been focusing on a wide variety of topics - leadership and teamwork, conflict resolution, and cooperation – the results have been incredibly positive! These young males have learned to discover what type of leaders they are, and how to best use or improve their leadership skills in school and in the community.
Students characterized an ideal leader by suggesting the most important traits - from vision to persistence, maturity and knowledge. Key Leadership traits were tested in an exercise, where the outcome taught that calmness and directness are more effective in a leader, rather than shouting and being out of control. Students showed a keen understanding of the value of a positive leader, and it’s significant role in reaching their potential.
In a session focusing on conflict resolution and cooperation, the pupils were asked to define what conflict is and how we can resolve it. There was agreement on many positive methods of resolving conflict. The participants then had to focus on cooperation - when should they cooperate and the characteristics of cooperating such as accepting difference, being patient, using communication and compromise. Students were incredibly creativity and clearly demonstrated the benefit of working with some one in completing a task.
These sessions provided to be valuable and effective in developing personal growth and awareness. Our hope is that teaching these skills to young men makes them feel inspired and empowered to go fourth and take the right path.
We’d like to thank the sponsors for this round of Crew programming – Byng Public School is sponsored by the United Way, and funds raised through the Be The Change Film Festival. Cameron Public School is sponsored by the United Way, and Beaver Valley Public School is sponsored by Parent Council, The United Way, and funds raised though the Chasing Ice Fundraiser, as part of the Keep Winter Cool Festival at Blue Mountain. Furthermore I would like to say thank you for the continued support and effort from our guest speakers and everybody that has volunteered, without this dedication the program would not be reaching the heights its destined to reach.
Until next time, stay tuned.

Thank you!
The Wasaga Beach Woodworkers Club made a generous donation to The Crew and Girlfriends.
Funds were raised by the club during The Wasaga Beach Lions Club Home & Garden Show on April 13th & 14th earlier this spring. Most of the money was donated by the parents of the children who came to the show and made birdfeeders with the Woodworkers.
These funds will be used to provide healthy snacks to Girlfriends and The Crew participants. Many thanks to the Woodworkers, for their continued support of these programs and for the support of youth in our community.
We have recently received some donations to continue with our youth programing for the fall semester.
We would like to say a big THANK YOU to: Hanna Motors, Greenland and TD Bank
With community partners like this our youth programs grow every year.
