Environment Network E-News, October 2013

Look at what we uncovered amongst three layers of asphalt. Yes, it is a TOWERS bag! We estimate that Towers closed it's doors in Blue Mountain Mall around twenty years ago. For those of you too young to remember… lucky you, and the rest of us in our rocking chairs take note of this also. We discovered this incredible archaeological specimen during our DEPAVE project on location at The Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts.
It's just like new… scary; no degradation. A little washing up and you could use it as a lunch bag. That re-use used to make mom proud and give those milk bags a little competition.
As wonderful as it is to uncover history; sadly not all is a legacy to be proud of; some things are better left behind.
We are moving in a more positive and sustainable direction for our future with projects like DEPAVE and so many others. We invite you to be a part of creating a positive legacy.

The Dangers of Aluminum
Aluminum can be found found in traditional deodorants, foil products, and many pots and pans. Aluminum mimics estrogen in the body and has been significantly tied to breast cancer in numerous research studies.
Keep your hormones in Balance
Avoiding known hormone disruptors like BPA (found in can liners and plastic food containers) It's said that over 130 studies have linked BPA to breast cancer development.
Add these foods to your diet:
Flax seeds
Garlic
Ginger
Turmeric
Walnuts
Dark green leafy vegetables
Pomegranates
Green tea
Swap out your Sunscreen
Did you know that sunscreen causes cancer? Applying traditional sunscreens is like taking a chemical bath in several harmful substances. One of them, dioxin, is a known carcinogen and is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Also, some components found in sunscreens mimic estrogen which can also be linked to the increase breast cancer cell growth.
Get Plenty of Sunshine
Vitamin D (the sunshine vitamin) can inhibit cancer cell growth. A deficiency in vitamin D is common in people with cancer. so soak up the sun in moderation and supplement D during those darker days.
In order to discuss prevention, it is important to understand environmental factors that contribute to the onset of breast cancer. Research has found that certain household products that contain carcinogenic ingredients may actually double the risk of breast cancer. Air fresheners and mould removers were the largest culprits.
Toxic ingredients in the food supply are increasingly being recognized as a threat by individuals worldwide; however many people continue to overlook the significance of harmful substances contained in consumer products such as shampoo or deodorant. The fact is that nearly all mainstream consumer products contain a multitude harmful ingredients.
These harmful substances, along with many others can be found in products we use every single day:
Deodorant
Shampoo
Soaps
Shaving gel or cream
Toothpaste
Make-up
Colognes and perfume

The Crew
THE CREW - Volunteer Profile
Lea Pankhurst Lea is from England, having come to Canada last November. He has recently graduated Worcester University with a sport and exercise BSc (Hons). His work with youth in sport is extensive, but more importantly it's his involvement with sport and disability that really stands out. During his time at university he coached wheelchair basketball and a basketball session designed for children who suffer from dyspraxia. In addition he worked as a basketball coach for the surrounding Worcestershire community, entering schools and providing weekly sessions. Furthermore, Lea has just returned from the USA working at camp Kennybrook, where has been serving as a senior basketball coach / camp councilor, a position he has held for 5 years. Its Leas experience and knowledge that makes him the perfect role model for members of The Crew, having traveled around the world working with youth, his diverse coaching background, and his ability to connect makes us here at the Environment Network feel very privileged and thankful. Thanks Lea. |

More than Honey
October 16, 2012
Music: David Stone www.davidstonemusic.ca
Over the past 15 years, 50% to 90% of all local bees have disappeared all over the planet. Everywhere, the same scenario is repeated: billions of bees leave their hives, never to return. Is “colony collapse disorder”, caused by pesticides? Medications against parasites such as varroa mites? New viruses? Travelling stress? Electro-magnetic waves? Or, are all these factors maybe acting together to threaten our world’s pollinators?
Fifty years ago, Einstein shared this prescient warning: “If bees were to disappear from the globe,” he predicted, “mankind would only have four years left to live.”
